Throughout its history, the Catholic Church has witnesses men and women of all types who have risen up to become models of Christian life, Some were great preachers, others had extraordinary compassion for God's poor, and still others attained great spiritual maturity. Christians call these special persons saints. Thus it was with St. Gerard Majella. He came from humble family in southern Italy. After discovering his call to serve God as a religious, he had to beg the local superior of the Redemptorists to accept him. Once Gerard was given the opportunity to serve God in his Chosen Vocation, his unique gifts emerged for all to see and admire.
